The key to this discovery lies in an extraordinary fossil site near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. This site, referred to as a "botanical Pompeii" due to its exceptional preservation, contains a layer of volcanic ash that has preserved an incredible variety of fruits and seeds.
"The New Mexico site is a treasure trove of botanical history," Saulsbury adds. "The preservation is so remarkable that we can study the structure and ecology of these ancient forests in great detail."
Challenging Conventional Wisdom
The findings from this site challenge the idea that large fruits evolved specifically to attract mammals, which were thought to have diversified after the dinosaurs. Instead, the research suggests that large fruits were already part of the botanical landscape during the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs still ruled the Earth.
"This research paints a very different picture of Cretaceous forests," Saulsbury notes. "It suggests that dinosaurs were not just passive observers but active participants in the evolution of fruiting plants."
Unraveling the Mystery
The study involved meticulous work, with Saulsbury and his team sorting through hundreds of tiny fossil seeds, categorizing them based on form rather than species. This painstaking process allowed them to piece together a more complete picture of the ancient plant life.
"It's a story of dinosaurs actively contributing to the forest ecosystem," Saulsbury concludes. "Their presence and interactions with plants may have been a driving force in the evolution of fruit-bearing plants."
